I cried during a commercial this weekend – how was your Easter?
I started off this holiday weekend by watching television with my parents. Everything was great until a Facebook commercial populated the screen.
I started shedding a tear or two. I looked over at my mom who was also experiencing an emotional moment.
Then I look at my dad who was smiling and exclaimed, “Way to go, Zuck!” As if him and the creator of Facebook are old friends. (I think we can all tell who contributes the comedic relief in my family.)
This commercial left such an impression on me that I had to know more. I realized that the poetic song that played in the background was what really touched my heart. There are many images from this pandemic that can evoke strong emotion, but the song specifically captured my attention.
After some digging, I found it – People’s Faces by Kate Tempest. It’s almost a year old, but in the context of the current times, it cuts deep. I’ve listened to it at least three times today.
The message: There is so much peace to be found in people’s faces.
When the world is crumbling around us, connecting in any way that we can and seeing each other’s faces is what will keep us grounded. I understood that message on multiple occasions this weekend.
I understood when I sat in my backyard and listened to the kids who live next door laugh and squeal with joy as they found Easter eggs around their backyard.
I understood as I heard people in the park behind my house say “okay, ready? 1,2,3 cheese,” as they took a picture wanting to remember a happy moment.
And I understood as I giggled to myself when I saw a little girl in a pair of offensively large bunny ears on an afternoon walk with her parents.
It may not be in-person, but we can still connect and find peace in each other’s voices, words, and faces.
