Much to Discuss

Oh my goodness, dear reader!

There is so much going on right now. Not only was this last weekend Halloween, but we are also experiencing an election, hurricanes causing alarm in the south, the time change messing up internal rhythms all over the country, and an overwhelming amount of information about coronavirus cases and safety.

It’s a lot.

My team shared some interesting articles with me this week about the state of events and what “going back to in-person” means.

I think transitioning to in-person or even hybrid is a scary thought right now. Especially with unsafe Halloween parties and political gatherings popping up all weekend, planners feel a heightened level of fear that their event might be the one that becomes the “super-spreader event” of the year.

We had an internal discussion about in-person event safety at Endless last week. It all started when Will shared this article: WTF is going on with IRL Events? It’s is a fascinating read from the perspective of someone who attended Smart Meetings Experiences in Colorado Springs and Connect in Orlando.

He outlines where the events took the right precautions while also shining a light on their missteps. It was interesting to hear the perspective of someone who was an actual attendee at a hybrid event, rather than just someone spewing out high-level recaps and biased reviews.

The second wave of conversations in our Endless Slack channel took place when this article was shared: ‘Events Can Take Place’: German Scientists Present COVID Experiment Results.

Here are Will’s thoughts on it.

“Things I like about it:
  • It’s talking about when they are coming based on actual experiments
  • That experiments like this are happening
Things I don’t like:
  • It doesn’t link to the actual study and showing the data
  • Potentially misleading headline: “Events can happen”
  • Germany has had some of the lowest cases since the beginning, I’d like the same study to happen in the US
  • They never site if anyone got sick in this article, they just talk about the precautions that seem to be helpful”

Mariana also weighed in:

“I want to read the actual study and I want a take on it from a publication that is highly regarded and scientifically based. If events have “no role” in the pandemic, then how come restaurants, coffee shops, hair/nail salons, gyms, small gatherings, and other places where people go above and beyond to secure hygiene (at least here in Europe) do? Not trying to be a naysayer but we have to be realistic here!”

It’s fascinating. There are so many things up in the air right now politically, socially, and economically. This is a big month. I think we will be finding out a lot more about what direction our industry is going in and gain clarity on what to prepare for going into 2021.

No matter what happens, Endless promises to stay informed and help share what we know about the future of events! Stay safe out there and happy November!
