- What’s Brewing: Live Events Coalition: Is It Helping The Industry?
✨ As we approach the final quarter of 2020, make sure that you’re up to date on this year’s Virtual Event Trends.
Starting the month off with Red Alert Restart! 🚨
Hello! Did you miss me? I sure missed you! I took a much needed week off from the newsletter during after the holiday weekend. And you were probably OOO anyways, so I figured you needed a break too!
But, a lot has happened already in September! Starting with one of the most beautiful movements I have ever seen in the events industry: the Red Alert Restart movement.
In case you missed it, Red Alert Restart is a movement that calls for the continuation of financial relief for people in the events industry. On the evening of September first, people and businesses lit up their buildings in red lights to bring awareness to the fact that:
- Live events employ over $1 trillion annually to the US economy
- 95% of live events have been canceled due to COVID-19
- 77% of the people in our industry have lost 100% of their income
- 96% of companies have cut staff
- 97% of 1099 workers have lost their jobs
If you work in the industry, these stats probably aren’t new to you. Nor is the fact that our industry has been severely impacted by the pandemic, but it was amazing to see everyone take a stand and ask for help. I think that’s such a powerful message – instead of curling up in a ball and giving up, our industry is demanding to be seen, heard, and appreciated. We will not let events go dark.
Little did we know that buildings weren’t going to be the only things lit up in red the past couple of weeks. I spent my three-day weekend traveling around a post-apocalyptic Yosemite with some friends from college.
Above is a picture I took on my trip. While it may look hauntingly pretty, it was nerve-wracking to be face to face with a scorched mother nature. And I was only in it for two days!
My heart goes out to those who have been affected by these fires. I hope that everyone stays safe out there.
And now, here’s The Weekly Soundcheck!
🆘 Diving deep into the Live Events Coalition and investigating its impact on the industry (40-minute podcast)
A lot of global media attention has been given to the events industry as of late. The Live Events Coalition has played a big role in this as it urges government officials to provide support to event planners who have lost everything due to the pandemic. This quote by Dustin shows the complexity of this issue:
“We were shut down by governments. They annihilated our industry overnight. And I think that it is fair to look to them and say, you closed us. We didn’t do anything wrong. You told us we couldn’t work. So, I do think that there is some responsibility for the governments to take care of those businesses that have been told they cannot work.”
